Indoor Pools, Calorex Case Study

Pooling Resources In Swindon
Romford-based EPS retrofit-installed a Calorex Delta 12 heat pump-based system at the 18 metre Dorcan Complex community indoor swimming pool operated by Swindon Borough Council. The unit has brought a new level of fresh air control in the pool hall, combining humidity control, heat recovery and ventilation. The Delta is set to achieve a target relative humidity of 60% at 28°C and it also enables the recovered heat to be used to supplement pool water and pool hall heating. Gas boilers supply the main pool heating whilst the existing ductwork has been supplemented by a new fresh air intake mushroom.

Built in 1974, the Dorcan Complex pool originally had no dehumidifiers. After problems were identified with condensation, a competitor's dehumidifier was installed in 1983. During the refit period, this unit was superseded by the Calorex Delta 12. When pool hall humidity rises beyond the set point selected, the Calorex Delta unit extracts moisture from a circulated air volume of 7000m 3 per hour. Up to 15kW of sensible heat can be recovered to the pool water during this process.
